We Got An Award!

We are thrilled, honoured and humbled to receive the 2018 World Rabies Day Award from the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC). The annual World Rabies Day Awards recognise Community Rabies Champions from across the globe and this award gives the us an opportunity to share our story about how individuals can make a difference for people and animals. This year's World Rabies Day award was judged by a panel of individuals from the World Health Organisation (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and MSD Animal Health.

We are inspired by the work of fellow awardees and nominees from around the world, and celebrate their stories of tenacity and perseverance. These individuals are our global peers, working in challenging environments, with limited resources, to make a difference for people and animals living in vulnerable communities. Rabies is preventable, but for those who do not have access to knowledge and resources, rabies remains a clear and present fear. These individuals and organisations are bridging that gap.

It is also important to share the story of GARC, which was founded by a leading rabies scientist with the aim of eliminating deaths caused by canine rabies by 2030. GARC is a platform to gather support for science and community-based efforts in the developing world, where a lack of political will and inequality means that 59,000 people continue to die every year from a disease that is preventable. The global network shaped by GARC shows just how much can be achieved when we pool our potential and collaborate.

Thank you to all who nominated and voted for us. This award is an acknowledgement of the importance of protecting the health and welfare of people, domestic animals and wildlife in the Himalaya, and motivates us to continue our work with our communities. This marks a milestone in our four-year history, but our work is far from over.
